For Weight Loss, Make Your Home your Gym

For Weight Loss, Make Your Home your GymThere are a lot of really nice places to go in Ft. Myers and Naples, but there is one place in the area that is just hands down better than anywhere else: your home. As the old saying goes, home is where the heart is. After having weight loss surgery, your home can be your strongest fortress and your best ally. There is no reason to break the bank trying to afford overpriced gym memberships. With just a little bit of planning, you can make a workout center in the middle of your home.

Why create a home gym?

According to research done by the fitness researching group Human Kinetics, distance is the number one reason people don’t go to the gym. Even when a gym is close, having to leave your house is a physical barrier in between you and a good workout. There are ways that you can cut down on that barrier, for example, by choosing a gym that is on your route home from work, but even then your workout success will be predicated by your ability to remember your gym bag. Having a gym at home eliminates many of the obstacles that often prevent people from working out.

What’s more—gyms know that you aren’t going to use their memberships, and that is why they offer such low rates. If everyone who had a gym membership took advantage of it, there wouldn’t be any standing room inside of the gym. No, if you want to make exercise a regular aspect of your life, it is a really good idea to find a way that you can work out at home.

Here are a few tips to help you plan your home gym:

  • Start with the basics: Don’t go over the top right away. Start with a small corner and purchase things like resistance bands, hand weights and a yoga mat.
  • Set up a TV: To start, gyms keep TVs on because they know they help people entertained while they workout. This is great if you have a home treadmill or stationary bike, but TVs in your workout area can give you easy access to workout videos, too.
  • Invest one step at a time: Going all out and getting a full in-house gym, complete with all the equipment you can dream of will definitely give you a workout space, but this is expensive. Instead, start small and work your way up. Remember, the goal of the equipment is to use it!

Of course, the most important thing about owning a home gym is using it. Once you have yours set up, be sure you spend time there every day and develop a routine that works well for your schedule and needs.
