Build a support system for weight loss help after bariatric surgery

Because transitioning into a world of change after bariatric surgery is challenging, there will be times when you need a little weight loss help. Having a solid support system of close friends and family is one of the most effective ways to cope with the mental and physical changes of weight loss surgery.

Your support system must include those closest to you who understand your past, accept your decision to get weight loss surgery and welcome the healthy lifestyle you’re pursuing. These are the people you want by your side on days when you don’t have the strength to fight a craving, when you can’t find the energy to work out and when you just can’t seem to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

A solid bariatric surgery support system offers:

  • A confidence boost that inspires motivation and fosters a positive self-image
  • Accountability to keep you on track with your weight loss goals
  • An extra push to stay focused on weight loss in trying times
  • Encouragement so you can stay positive during emotional highs and lows

Lines of Support

A solid support network should include multiple lines of support. The more lines of support you have, the easier it will be to find weight loss help when you need it most.

Friends and family should be your first line of support. Your friends and family know who you were in the past, who you are now and who you are trying to become with weight loss surgery. Talk to them about specific ways they can provide weight loss help, like meeting you at the park to go for a walk or cooking a healthy dinner with you.

Your weight loss surgeon can be another line of support. Dr. Bass can provide you with ongoing counseling and education long after your operation has been completed. Feel free to speak with Dr. Bass about any questions you have concerning diet, exercise and mental well-being after weight loss surgery.

Your weight loss surgery support group can be your third line of support. Support group meet-ups are great places to share your thoughts, feelings and questions about weight loss with other weight loss surgery patients. Because they’ve gone through circumstances similar to your own, other group members may offer perspectives your friends and family cannot.
