Fit for the Long Haul

There is an old saying about not being able to teach an old dog new tricks, and when it comes to losing weight there are many who assume that once they’ve reached a certain age there is just no point in trying to make changes. However, the facts don’t back up this point of view. In fact, a recent study published lately in the New York Times reaffirmed the finding that when it comes to exercise and physical fitness, it doesn’t matter what age you decide to get started—getting fit later in life is just as beneficial for your health as being fit all along.

Failed attempts at weight loss can really damage your motivation to keep trying to improve your health. After a while it is easy to start asking yourself “what is the point?”, and to start giving in to old habits since your weight loss goal feels so out of reach. But the reality is that there is a very big point to all of those efforts. Obesity-related diseases can have a drastic impact on your health and wellness, increasing your risk for heart attack and stroke, as well as making you more likely to experience mental health issues like depression and anxiety. It is never too late to start making the long-term changes in your life that would put these health concerns behind you.

It is easy to get started with a strong exercise routine at any age. Whether you’ve worked out on and off over the years or you are totally new to the gym, you can start making real changes in your life by adopting a few healthy habits.

Easy ways to get started with exercise include:

  • Going for a walk every evening after dinner
  • Waking up 30 minutes early to do some light exercises before work
  • Stopping at the gym on your way home to participate in a weight loss class like aerobics
  • Making plans with a friend or family member to train together for a 5k

It is important to remember that no one is an expert when they first get started. Everyone you see at the gym lifting weights or running a mile had to start from the beginning, just like you. It doesn’t matter what your age is, it is never too late to start making positive changes in your life. Whether you have had weight loss surgery in the past and are looking to re-connect with your healthy goals, or you are just hoping to get started with making healthy changes in your life, the first step is to simply get started.
