Three Ways to Keep Your Weight Loss and Exercise GoalsWhile bariatric surgery and the associated dietary alterations can help you lose weight and reverse some weight related disorders, it takes a more rounded approach to weight loss to end up lighter, stronger, and healthier. To take-off weight and keep it off for the long-term, it is extremely beneficial to incorporate exercise, too. Make a commitment this year to make physical activity a part of your daily life. A few ways to make that goal more achievable:

1. Exercise in short intervals.

Sometimes, you don’t have an uninterrupted hour in your day to work out. Incorporate shorter bursts of exercise instead. If you can get in 10 minutes of exercise at a time three times in a day, that’s enough to meet the recommended daily minimum. Shorter sessions can also be good when you are just getting started and have not yet built up your endurance.

2. Sign up for a class.

Whether you go for water aerobics, Zumba, or something else, exercising with others can have a positive effect. Plus, it’s harder to skip exercise when you’ve paid for the class and people are expecting you. There are classes available for people at all levels of experience.

3. Use an app.

There are dozens of smart phone apps that can aid you in your quest to become healthier and more active. Tracking apps such as RunKeeper allow you to keep a diary of your activity; when you see how much you’ve accomplished, it inspires you to do more. Other apps offer exercise suggestions to help you decide the workout out to do. Still others can give you a stronger idea of how many calories a particular activity burns, helping you with your weight loss goals.

The New Year is the perfect time to define your goals and begin the work toward a healthier lifestyle. Talk to your doctor about the best pre and post-surgical exercise plan for you.
