The Importance of a Healthy Weight

For some, the desire to lose weight stems from superficial reasons such as wanting to look more attractive, but there are many more important reasons to lose weight. Attaining a healthy weight by eating healthy, exercising outside in the Naples, Florida sun or choosing  bariatric surgery in Ft. Myers, Florida will reduce your risk for serious conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.

Lugging around extra weight causes a host of health problems from aching joints to sleep apnea. Because extra pounds put pressure on your joints, you’re more likely to develop arthritis. Further, a diet high in sugars and trans fat while low in whole grains can damage your arteries, which contributes to a higher risk of heart disease. In addition, many people who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are overweight, with over half of them being obese.

So, what can you do as an obese individual to reduce your risk of these health problems? Just losing 10 percent of your body weight can help improve blood glucose levels, lower your cholesterol, and reduce your blood pressure. Weight loss either from exercise, diet, or weight loss surgery, can lessen the severity of diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Sleep apnea, which is a condition where individuals stop breathing for a prolonged period of time while asleep, is also linked to being overweight.

People have various reasons why they want to lose weight but the most important reason for any weight loss goal should be to improve your health. When you take steps toward a healthy weight you’ll feel better both emotionally and physically.
