Finding Healthy Snacks to Love

One of the biggest myths surrounding weight loss programs is that in order to lose weight you have to be hungry all of the time.  This just isn’t the case, and you can talk to anyone who has successfully lose weight using weight loss surgery as witness. When you undergo weight loss surgery, your body goes through so many changes to support your new healthy lifestyle that hunger isn’t an issue—especially if you spend the time getting to know what you can have, and what you will enjoy.

Healthy snacking is something that you can fall in love with if you spend enough energy figuring out what you like most. Sure, some of your old favorite snacks may not be a good option after you have weight loss surgery, but there are plenty of healthy snacks that you probably have never tried before.

Your weight loss surgeon will give you specific instructions regarding what types of foods you should gravitate towards as you lose weight, but for the most part, the healthiest options out there are foods that are high in protein, low in simple carbohydrates, and are plant-based, if possible.

Here are a few healthy snacks that you may want to consider after having weight loss surgery:

  • Apple slices with peanut butter, or a comparable nut butter
  • Low-fat cheese sticks
  • Low-calorie protein shakes
  • Yogurt—especially Greek yogurt, with fresh fruit.
  • Any fresh fruits or vegetables

Contrary to popular belief, snacking is actually more important following weight loss surgery than it ever was before in your diet. While previously you may have focused your eating habits on three meals a day, this isn’t recommended following weight loss surgery. You can’t eat all that much in any one sitting on a post-bariatric diet, and so small snacks spread throughout the day is the best way to go.

Talk to your weight loss surgeon about the best snacking habits for your personal health needs. Eating small healthy snacks throughout the day will prevent you from feeling hungry and will keep you interested in your food as you lose weight. Try packing a lunch box for your workday with lots of little snacks inside. You may be surprised just how much you love healthy eating, once you start spending time and energy creating the snacks that you’ll love.
